PERU GUARANTEES PROTECTION OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES DURING DAKAR RALLY



ANDINA. The Ministry of Culture guaranteed the protection of archaeological or paleontological areas located on the route covering the Dakar Rally raid, which will be held for the first time in Peru in January.

Archaeology Director at this ministry Luis Enrique Caceres said that since May they have been working with Amaury Sports Organisation (ASO), the event organizers, so that the final stage of the race, which goes from Tacna to Lima, especially the Nazca Lines, in Ica.

Caceres noted that the international competition will take place 40 kilometers away from the enigmatic lines, as it is an intangible area listed in Unesco’s world heritage sites.

The competitors will cover approximately 8,400km during the race - of which 4,200 will be special stages.

With the race heading to Peru for the first time, it means that the Dakar Rally will now have been contested in 27 countries over the course of its 33-year history.
