CUSCO PLANS TOURIST CIRCUIT LINKING

ANDINA. Regional authorities in Cusco, southeast Peru, are working on a new tourist circuit covering a host of lesser-known attractions in Vilcabamba, Machu Picchu and Choquequirao.

"Although every area has its own tourist attractions, there are many [attractions] that go unnoticed because they are not part of a circuit," said the head of Cusco's Plan Copesco, Adriel Gamarra.

He said the project will aim to enhance the tourism image of local communities, further
promote the preservation of archaeological sites, improve trekking routes and strengthen the regional tourism management, among other goals.

"The initiative also seeks to diversify the tourist offer in the Imperial City. In addition to Machu Picchu, Cusco has other tourism potential areas like Choquequirao and Vilcabamba, which can contribute to the social and economic development of the region," Gamarra added.

As an example, he noted that the Lord of Wari tomb, recently found in the archaeological complex of Espiritu Pampa in the Vilcabamba district, "has amazed the world and could easily become a major attraction such as those of Machu Picchu and Choquequirao."
