Manu National Park to establish itself as ecotourism destination in 2012

Manu National Park, located in the departments of Madre de Dios and Cusco, aims to establish itself as an ecotourism destination and generate resources for local communities, the National Service of Protected Natural Areas by the State (Sernanp) reported.

Authorities of said protected natural areas met last week with tourism entrepreneurs who operate in the park to draw up a plan and schedule of activities to be developed during this year.

According to them, ecotourism provides economic benefits, either directly or indirectly, to local communities, especially to those who live in the buffer zone of Manu.

Sernanp expects to start maintenance works of tourism infrastructure as well as to open new attractions and paths in the sectors of Cocha Otorongo and Salvador.

Manu holds one of the highest levels of biodiversity of any park in the world. Overall, more than 15,000 species of plants and 250 varieties of trees have been found there in a single hectare.
