Lake Titicaca Machu Picchu road corridor to be improved in 2012


Puno's Regional Directorate of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Dircetur) reported that improvement works of the road corridor between Lake Titicaca and Machu Picchu will start no later than the first six months of 2012 with an investment of over 9 million soles.

The head of Dicertur-Puno, Lourdes Abarca told Andina News Agency that the main purpose is to provide better infrastructure and service to tourists who visit Puno and use said corridor to go to Cusco.

The project entitled “Fortalecimiento del corredor Lago Titicaca-Machu Picchu” (Strengthening of Lake Titicaca-Machu Picchu road corridor) is approved by the National Public Investment System (SNIP) and will be executed in coordination with the regional government and Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur).

“The works will take three years and include the improvement and restoration of the access routes to tourist attractions as well as training for the people involved in said project in order to provide better service to tourists and other people,” Abarca noted.

Abarca added that these works will benefit over 700,000 people who live along the corridor in districts like Capachica, Amantani and Acora.

Oldest mural relief of Mochica Temple to be showcased in Lambayeque

The oldest mural relief of the Mochica temple, built in the Ventarron hill, in the district of Pomalca, Lambayeque, located in north Peru will be presented this month to public opinion, the director of the archaeological project, Ignacio Alva, announced. 

Said discovery shows different images of an animal related to fishes and would have a similar antiquity to the relief of the folded hands of the Kotosh temple, in Huanuco, which holds 2,300 years old. Alva noted that the relief of Ventarron was discovered in December 2011. "It would be the first image in the temple and the oldest one," he said in statements to Andina. In turn, the director explained that it is not a mural picture, and added that the conservation process and access preparation are being implemented.


Six peruvian Cities nominated for new 7 wonders cities campaign

Cusco

Cusco, Arequipa, Iquitos, Callao, Trujillo and Lima have been announced as nominees for the New 7 Wonders Cities campaign.

The six Peruvian cities were nominated along 1,200 cities from 220 countries, reported PeruThisWeek.

The next stage of voting ends on March 7, and 300 cities will go on to the next round.

Voting will carry on throughout 2012 and 2013 and the 7 New Wonders Cities will be announced on December 7 2013

New 7 Wonders Cities is the third campaign organized by New7Wonders, following the man-made New 7 Wonders of the World and the New 7 Wonders of Nature. 

The Amazon Rainforest was named as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature of the World, on November 11.

The other 6 natural wonders are: Halong Bay, Vietnam; Iguazu Falls, Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay; Jeju Island, Korea; Komodo, Indonesia; Puerto Princesa, Philippines; and Table Mountain, South Africa.

Peru’s Pacaya Samiria National Reserve updates plan for tourist


The plan for tourist and recreational use of Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, in the Amazonian department of Loreto and which is considered the largest of Peru, was updated in order to plan and guide the development of sustainable tourism activities.

The National Service of Protected Natural Areas by the State (Sernanp) reported that said plan is part of the sectoral policies and guidelines such as the National Tourism Strategic Plan.

It added that the revision and update of the document was carried out through a participatory process in which different stakeholders involved with the natural area, such as specialists of Sernanp and the Management Committee of the Reserve, took part.

The national reserve of Pacaya Samiria is a priority for the National Tourism Strategic Plan, being also the sixth largest protected area with greater influx of visitors and revenues.

Such reserve is one of the largest protected areas in the country that has an area of more than 20,000 km² containing a rich eco diversity.

Taca starts new flights from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado and Arequipa


Taca airlines reported that it started new interregional flights from the city of Cusco to Puerto Maldonado (Madre de Dios), with a daily flight, and to Arequipa, with three flights weekly.

Avianca Taca Sales Director for South America Nina Garrues said that with these flights the airline expects to meet the needs of their customers and strengthen its route network nationwide.

According to her, passengers from Cusco will be able to get to Puerto Maldonado with Taca airlines on a daily basis.

Garrues stated that by adding this city to Taca’s route network, not only will the number of business travelers increase but so will the arrival of domestic and foreign tourists.

Among the ecological attractions that Puerto Maldonado holds are the Manu National Park, Tambopata National Reserve, Bahuaja Sonen National Park, among others, Garrues stressed.
