Puno's Regional Directorate of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Dircetur) reported that improvement works of the road corridor between Lake Titicaca and Machu Picchu will start no later than the first six months of 2012 with an investment of over 9 million soles.
The head of Dicertur-Puno, Lourdes Abarca told Andina News Agency that the main purpose is to provide better infrastructure and service to tourists who visit Puno and use said corridor to go to Cusco.
The project entitled “Fortalecimiento del corredor Lago Titicaca-Machu Picchu” (Strengthening of Lake Titicaca-Machu Picchu road corridor) is approved by the National Public Investment System (SNIP) and will be executed in coordination with the regional government and Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur).
“The works will take three years and include the improvement and restoration of the access routes to tourist attractions as well as training for the people involved in said project in order to provide better service to tourists and other people,” Abarca noted.
Abarca added that these works will benefit over 700,000 people who live along the corridor in districts like Capachica, Amantani and Acora.
